As pressure mounts against the US government to declassify the 28 pages of the Senate’s 9/11 investigation, and as a new bill that could hold Saudi Arabia responsible for the attack makes its way through Congress, the Saudis are doing everything in their power to suppress the truth. That includes blackmailing the US government.
According to The New York Times Saudi Arabia’s foreign minister told the Obama Administration and Congress last month, that if this bill passes, they would sell off $750 billion in US treasuries and other assets. The bill would create an exemption in the Sovereign Immunities Act of 1976, which would allow the families of 9/11 victims to sue Saudi royal family members who may have helped facilitate the terrorist attack.
Saudi Arabia, being the third largest holder of U.S Treasury bills in the world behind China and Japan, has warned the Obama administration and Congress that they will begin liquidating all of their U.S. assets if Congress passes a bill allowing the Saudi government to be held responsible. Riyadh’s resolve to actually deliver on the threat is dubious, since selling off those assets would be technically challenging and would damage the dollar, against which the Saudi national currency is pegged.
The bill before the senate is meant to clarify that the immunity enjoyed by foreign nationals should not be applicable to cases where a nation is found responsible for a terrorist attack on American soil. If passed, the bill would effectively clear the way for the role of the Saudi government to be explored in the numerous lawsuits filed regarding 9/11.
President Obama has come out against the bill, saying that it would lead foreign nations to retaliate with their own legislation. Secretary of State John Kerry added that the bill would “expose the United States of America to lawsuits and take away our sovereign immunity and create a terrible precedent.” In response to this political resistance, the families of 9/11 victims have expressed outrage. Mindy Kleinberg, who lost her husband in the World Trade Center and who is promoting the legislation, stated that “It’s stunning to think that our government would back the Saudis over its own citizens.”
